Teeth Whitening Q&A

Why Do Teeth Turn Yellow?

Yellowing, or discoloration, occurs because a number of habits or behaviors, most commonly eating and drinking things such as berries, coffee, and tea which stain teeth. Smoking and using tobacco products also yellows and stains teeth, usually very much so. Whitening treatments employed by dentists can generally remove the stains. In some instances, the staining or discoloration is actually internal, caused by damage or harm to the tooth, and in these cases deep internal bleaching or applying a crown or veneer will be required to make the tooth look white again. Using particular medications for a long time or undergoing a root canal can also cause internal discoloration.Teeth Whitening

How Safe is Teeth Whitening?

Bleaching, or whitening, performed at the dentist’s office is designed to be very safe. These treatments are formulated to make patients feel more confident with their smiles and will not damage teeth. The dentist only uses proven effective teeth whitening services in order to make sure that patients get the best results without any unwanted complications. Tooth sensitivity may occasionally be noticed after the procedure, however it should resolve within a day or so and any sensitivity experience should be nominal.

What is the Zoom Whitening Procedure Like?

To start, the dentist will assess the teeth for any indications of damage or decay which may hinder the bleaching process. If found, the spots will be cleaned and any treatment needed prior to whitening will be carried out. To obtain whiter teeth, a state-of-the-art, light activated gel made with hydrogen peroxide is painted onto teeth. This gel works together with a special light to remove stains. To ensure that each tooth is coated and exposed to the light the same as the others, the individual’s lips will be held back with a retainer. The light is then aimed on the teeth for roughly 15 minutes. When enough time has gone by, the gel is wiped away and the lip retainer is removed. Patients should notice whiter, brighter teeth immediately.
