What are Invisalign® Aligners?

The Invisalign® System is an orthodontic tool which is utilized by dentists and orthodontists to correct issues of misalignment or overcrowded teeth without using conventional, metal braces. The Invisalign® System is not like these traditional braces because the aligners used are made from translucent, BPA-free plastic which has been approved for dental applications. They are nearly invisible when being worn. The Invisalign® aligners are made precisely for each person using x-rays, impressions, and 3D imaging to obtain the unique measurement and specifications of his or her teeth and gums. This information is then forwarded to the dental laboratory where the aligners are fabricated.

How do the Aligners Work?

In most cases, the dentist will begin by laying out a treatment plan and ordering a set of aligners for the patient. The exact time frame needed for treatment and number of aligner sets employed will varying depending on the severity of the individual’s orthodontic needs. The aligners will be worn during the entire process and be taken out only to brush and floss teeth, change out the old set, or when eating particular foods. Generally, the aligner set is switched out for a new one every 2 weeks and should be worn for at least 20 to 22 hours each day for the best results in the shortest time frame. The aligners created to be comfortable and to avoid aggravating the cheeks and gums as traditional braces are known to. The treatment program typically lasts 12 months. However, this will depend on the person’s exact needs.

What Advantages Does the Invisalign® System Offer?

Conventional braces, the most commonly used orthodontic device, cannot be taken out during the treatment time. The Invisalign® aligners can be removed whenever the individual finds the need to, such as when eating or brushing teeth. Invisalign® aligners are also ideal for people who do not want to feel self conscious throughout the treatment process which sometimes occurs with traditional metal braces. Hygiene routines are easier to maintain as well since the aligners can be removed allowing for better cleaning around brackets and wires.
